Use Scotland’s funding and property rules for a Scottish heat-pump project. Then compare a fully surveyed design, complete installation scope and practical long-term support. A national grant headline does not establish eligibility or your final installation price.

Funding starts with Home Energy Scotland

The current Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan page lists heat-pump grants up to £7,500, potentially £9,000 with the rural uplift, and optional interest-free loan funding. Availability and conditions apply. Obtain the required scheme offer before committing to work on the assumption it will be funded.

The current terms distinguish grants from loans, charge an administration fee on loans and exclude replacement heat pumps from grant support. Hybrids are not eligible under the cited terms. Show gross cost, confirmed grant and optional borrowing separately.

Replacement, landlord and self-build cases

An existing heat-pump owner should not assume the same grant as someone leaving fossil fuels. The current scheme page describes a loan route for replacement heat pumps. Landlords, self-builds and other ownership arrangements can follow different rules. Ask the scheme about your circumstances before an installer quote deducts funding.

Design for the actual site

Scottish conditions differ by location, altitude and exposure. The MCS reference uses location and altitude in its design-condition approach. A low operating-temperature limit does not establish the heat delivered at your radiator temperature.

For exposed or coastal sites, check corrosion requirements, wind, snow, drainage and service access. Read our winter guide and request the exact winter duty selection.

The scheme requires appropriate certification and permissions. A sales statement should not substitute for these checks. Our planning guide by nation provides the wider starting point.

What will it cost?

The installation-cost guide explains the components. Access, travel, electrical work, cylinder position and radiator changes affect price. Do not assume a universal Scottish surcharge or saving without comparable surveys.

Compare at least two quotes for the same comfort and hot-water service. Keep grant and loan finance separate from the work so that a monthly payment does not hide a higher installation total.

Choose equipment and support together

Use the review directory to understand the unit, then the installer checklist to assess commissioning and repairs. For a remote property, establish the winter fault-response route and temporary heating arrangement. A long warranty is valuable only if the required maintenance and service are practical.
