IKEA has officially entered the renewable home heating market with the launch of air-to-water heat pumps in Germany, signalling a major move towards sustainable living. The Swedish retail giant has partnered with green energy provider Svea Solar to deliver this eco-friendly heating solution, with aims to cut household CO₂ emissions by up to 75%.

What Is an Air-to-Water Heat Pump?

An air-to-water heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to a home's water-based central heating system. These systems provide both space heating and hot water, and are significantly more energy-efficient than traditional gas boilers.

Heat pumps are a cornerstone of the UK’s transition to low-carbon heating, and IKEA’s entry into this market marks an important step for widespread adoption.

IKEA Heat Pump Availability in the UK

At present, IKEA’s air-to-water heat pumps are only available in Germany. There has been no official announcement regarding UK availability. However, IKEA has publicly expressed its long-term commitment to expanding access to affordable renewable energy solutions, making a UK launch likely in the future.

How Much Will IKEA Heat Pumps Cost in the UK?

In Germany, the cost of an 8kW air-to-water heat pump—including installation—is approximately €28,000, which equates to around £24,000. This is significantly higher than average UK prices, which range from £8,000 to £15,000 before government subsidies.

German pricing reflects stricter regulations and complex installation requirements. If launched in the UK, IKEA may adjust pricing to remain competitive in the British market.

UK Government Grants for Heat Pumps

UK homeowners can currently take advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers grants of up to £7,500 for the installation of air-to-water heat pumps. In addition, 0% VAT applies to clean energy technologies until at least 2027, reducing the cost burden for those switching to renewable heating systems.

IKEA Heat Pump Features and Benefits

  • Works with existing radiators and underfloor heating

  • Provides space heating and hot water

  • Reduces household carbon emissions

  • Can integrate with solar power systems

  • Offers expert consultation, installation and maintenance

  • Backed by up to 15-year performance guarantees

How IKEA’s Heat Pumps Compare

While brands like Daikin, Vaillant, and Mitsubishi dominate the UK heat pump market, IKEA’s entry could shake up the sector by offering transparent pricing, brand trust, and turnkey installation services through Svea Solar.

In Germany, IKEA Family members benefit from a 15% discount, and similar incentives could be introduced in the UK if the rollout expands.

Is It Worth Waiting for IKEA Heat Pumps in the UK?

For UK homeowners considering a heat pump installation in 2025, IKEA’s offering is not yet available, but it may be worth monitoring. In the meantime, other air-to-water heat pump systems are widely available with generous government grants and competitive pricing.
